Reusable shopping bags are available free for community use in Australia. The idea is that people wanting to shop use one of the bags then return it for someone else. The community effort included sewing bees to create the bags, and there is even a “mascot” bag featuring Elmo which they hope to be able to track for social media visibility. The reusable bags would replace plastic bags – of which Australians alone use between 4 and 6 billion a year. There are around 200 reusable bags now with more in the works.
