American Express knows that they can do more to support small businesses. This is why they set up their register your card and receive discounts campaign. A small business that was willing to participate was able to offer a discount to American Express shoppers that bought stuff in their stores.
The fact that the company capped the original campaign at 118,000 cards was a good sign of how American Express was nervous about the success of the campaign. They weren’t sure that the campaign was going to get a great response, but people still love small businesses.
