Act now on annual leave before the festive season shutdown

Act now on annual leave before the festive season shutdown

October 23, 2017 By James L Leave a Comment

Many business have a shut-down of operations during the holiday season. If your business does this, you must relay this information, preferably in writing, to all affected employees. Depending on your industry, the time you should give in the notice will be anywhere from three months to four weeks. However, please be aware that depending on their contract, you will not be able to force employees to take their annual leave during this time. Although employees usually love to have the holidays off to rest, some employers will actually take advantage of this time to meet increased customer demand.

Key Takeaways:

  • Annual leave is an important asset for any employee in the office. Try to arrange for annual leave before any given deadline as well.
  • Employees will need to trust their unpaid leave to the business itself. During a shutdown period the staff may need to rely on that information too.
  • Think about taking unpaid leave in the meantime as it is needed. Try to direct staff to take annual leave whenever they need specific notice.

“Many Awards and Agreements allow you to direct staff to take annual leave, or unpaid leave when annual leave has been exhausted, during a shutdown period. Employees must be provided with specific notice for different Awards.”
