Alcohol red tape report delayed

Alcohol red tape report delayed

April 3, 2017 By James L Leave a Comment

Convenience stores are notorious for selling alcohol. A report done by the “Red Tape Senate Committee ” was suppose to be released this week but they have refused to release the findings until an unknown future date. The committees job is to determine what exactly is holding back aka “Red tape” with regard to compliance costs; impacts on health, safety and opportunity; when opening up a convenience store that also sells liquor or a liquor store that sells food.

Key Takeaways:

  • Many countries in the world have convenience stores that responsibly sell alcohol alongside other products.
  • I recently saw a small Liquorland Express which is, for all intents and purposes, a convenience store. It’s crazy that they can do this, yet two doors up a convenience store can’t sell beer and wine.
  • Regulators really do need to update their thinking, look at it from a commercial point of view, and forget the social backlash or the fact that they’ll be criticised.

“The committee’s role is to examine said effects of red tape; in particular with regard to compliance costs”
