Fair Work Ombudsman intervention leads to improved compliance

3 out of 5 restaurant owners are not aware of research and development tax breaks. This could be costing them significantly. To qualify for Restaurant R&D, the establishment needs to prove that they are breaking new ground in the culinary field. There exists what is called a competent professional test to determine if a restaurant is indeed furthering innovation. To claim this reward, restaurants need to submit detailed reports outlining their purpose and results. Perhaps of great importance, these experiments do not have to be successful.

Key Takeaways:

  • A nationwide audit of 891 businesses previously found to have contravened workplace laws has revealed the positive impact of intervention by the Fair Work Ombudsman on employers’ improved compliance.
  • The campaign found that 83 per cent of previously non-compliant businesses were now paying their workers correctly, while 81 per cent were complying with record-keeping and pay slip requirements.
  • During the campaign, Fair Work Inspectors issued 26 Infringement Notices and 174 Letters of Caution. The Fair Work Ombudsman also recovered $207,990 in back-pay for 485 employees from 132 businesses.

“Fair Work Ombudsman Natalie James said the results show the progress being made by her agency towards creating a culture of compliance with Australian workplace laws.”
